BigData and Cloud aren’t just for Large Enterprises

I really like this statement in Luigi’s latest blog which BTW was featured in HP’s Grounded to the Cloud Blog. Traditionally IT vendors would sell their hardware and software solutions to the CIO, and anyone else in the IT domain. Rarely would IT vendors sell directly into the lines of business. Why would they? We have been taught that the IT organization is your technology service broker. They know what business needs. Who better than to provide you the service? Ironically as time went by, we learned that IT couldn’t deliver basic IT services fast enough to meet the business needs. This was not a one off, but a trend that led to consumption of Cloud Services and the Shadow IT phenomenon. Will IT departments be leading the Big Data initiative or will Big Data Solutions be another ticket item for Shadow IT?  “Big Data: All about the Use Case”

Data growth is at the forefront of challenges for organizations. Different types of data has surfaced  including unstructured data such as audio, video, images, social media, email, and web content, as well as structured data such as customer transaction logs are creeping up today. It is growing 40% a year into the next decade, expanding to include not only the increasing number of people and enterprises doing everything online, but also all the devices connected to the Internet, unleashing a new wave of opportunities for businesses and people around the world.
The message is clear – the individuals leading need to adapt and take action today.

So, are Big Data solutions only available for Big Companies? Can SMBs take advantage of the Cloud and Big Data solutions?
At HP Discover Barcelona, HP unveiled HP Haven OnDemand, an important milestone in its Big Data strategy that gives organizations of all sizes cloud-based access to key components of HP’s world class analytics platform. I had the chance to meet up with a good friend who happens to be HP’s Big Data Evangelist Paul Muller (@xthestreams) in Barcelona. Paul and I discussed how organizations of all sizes can harness the power of Big Data to better store, manage, understand and act upon the volume, velocity and variety of organizational data to drive maximum return on Information. Enjoy!
